The Panther women's tennis team had a busy weekend as eight teams competed in the Middlebury Invitational Tournament. The Panthers won two of six brackets, while Tufts won the other four.
First-year player Claire Smyser (Houston, Texas) won the flight "B" singles bracket as she was a 6-3, 3-0 (ret.) winner in the finals. Other singles highlights include first-year player Amy Roche (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), who lost in the finals of the "A" singles flight, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. First-year player Jackie Ross (Ipswich, Mass.) lost in the semifinals of the bracket, 4-6, 6-1, 13-11. In flight "C", junior Lauren Ready (Lexington, Mass.) advanced to the finals before falling, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles action, Roche and senior Jena Sigel (Purchase, N.Y.) won flight "B" by a score of 8-4. The duo of Ross and junior Sandy Spring (Westport, Conn.) lost in the finals of flight "A", 8-3, while Smyser and senior Kristin Baker (Piedmont, Calif.) fell in the flight "C" finals, 9-8 (7).
