Women’s Squash Posts Home-Opening Win Over #16 Amherst

The Middlebury women's squash team grabbed an 8-1 victory over #16 Amherst in the squad's home-opening match Tuesday evening. The 14th-ranked Panther women return to the court Wednesday when they host 20th-ranked St. Lawrence at 4:30 p.m.

In the victory against the Purple & White, three-game victories came from Beatrijs Kuijpers in the third slot, Zoe Carey at #4, Caroline Jahrling at #6 and Audrey Ellen at #8. In the second spot, Middlebury's Tiffany Hau and Amherst's Rachel Ang split the first two games, but Hau picked up the team points via wins in games three and four. Alexa Comai dropped the opening game at #5 to Amherst's Priya Sinha, but Comai secured the ensuing three games for the four-game victory.
Amherst grabbed its lone point at #7, as the remaining three matches went to five games. Saskia Pownall-Gray lost the opening two games to Amherst's Kim Krayacich at the top of the ladder, but Pownall-Gray responded by cruising for easy victories in games three, four and five. At the bottom, Middlebury's Hope Matthews trailed 2-1 to Amherst's Corri Johnson, but came back for 11-3 and 11-6 wins in the fourth and fifth games.
