No. 3 Women’s Soccer Downs Maine Farmington in NCAA Opening Round

Playing host to an NCAA Regional, third-ranked Middlebury scored the final three goals during a 4-1 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington (8-13-0) in a first-round game Saturday on South Street Field. The Panthers improve to 16-1-2 and will play Ithaca on Sunday in the regional final at 1:00 p.m.

Recording the first 18 shots of the match, Middlebury broke through on the scoreboard with 12:03 left in the opening half. Simone Ameer crossed the ball from the right side to Sabrina Glaser, who back heeled it. Abigail Blyler ran onto the touch and deposited it into the back of the net. The Panthers finished with a 26-0 edge in shots during the opening half.

Out of the halftime break, UMaine-Farmington tied the match at 1-1 with 39:29 remaining. After a Panther foul near midfield, McKenna Brodeur received a pass in the offensive end, made a nifty move to get it to her right foot, blasting a shot from 20 yards away that tucked into the upper-left corner on their second shot of the match. The tally was Brodeur's 22nd of the season.

The Panthers regained the lead at 63:54 following a foul just outside the penalty box. Eliza Robinson's ensuing free kick hit the crossbar and came down to Olivia Miller, who headed the ball in for her third goal of the year. Middlebury added an insurance goal nearly 14 minutes later following a foul just outside the box. On the free kick, Robinson sent a low through ball to a streaking Eliza Van Voorhis, who redirected into the net for her team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 77:19 mark.

The Panthers recorded their final goal after a foul when Robinson lofted a free kick into the upper-left corner from 25 yards away at 86:04 for her fifth goal of the season.

Callie Hammer had 20 saves in goal for the Beavers. Middlebury held a 51-2 advantage in shots and took all 16 of the match's corner kicks.
