Middlebury College softball players Irene Margiotta (Mendham, N.J.) and Sophia Marlino (Devon, Pa.) have earned NESCAC honors. Margiotta was tabbed the league's Pitcher of the Week, while Marlino earned Player of the Week honors. The duo helped the Panthers open their season at 4-0 with a pair of doubleheader sweeps last weekend over the College of New Rochelle and Drew.
Margiotta went 2-0 last week with a 0.54 ERA over 13 innings of work. She tossed a pair of complete-game wins, scattering eight hits, while allowing one earned run with 10 strikeouts. Margiotta also surpassed the 100-career strikeout mark with five in her win on Sunday over Drew.
Marlino hit .643 in her first four collegiate games as a Panther. She drove in 11 runs, scored nine times, while belting three doubles and three home runs. Marlino ended the week going 3-4 with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored in a win over Drew.
The Panthers are idle this week until spring break action begins in Florida on Saturday.
