Middlebury Finishes Weekend Series with Amherst

Middlebury finished its weekend series with Amherst, dropping both ends of a home NESCAC West doubleheader as the visitors won the first game 3-0 and took the second 7-0. The Panthers (6-7, 0-3) host St. Joseph's (Vt.) for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., while the Mammoths (17-6, 6-0) are home Wednesday for a twin bill against Smith.

The hosts were poised to break through for the game's first run in the second inning of the opening game when Kati Daczkowski was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a double by Siobhan O'Sullivan. Mammoth starting pitcher Jackie Buechler was able to get out of the inning, inducing a ground out to end the threat.

Amherst got on the scoreboard first, plating a pair of runs in the third inning. Lauren Tuiskula led off the frame with a double to the gap in left field and scored on a base hit down the right-field line by Ally Kido. The second run came on a sacrifice fly to center field by Alena Marovitz.

The Mammoths scored the game's other run in the top of the seventh when Salustri singled to center field to plate Annie Murphy for a 3-0 final.

Panther pitcher Irene Margiotta (3-3) tossed a complete game, allowing three runs in seven innings with three strikeouts. O'Sullivan went 1-3 with a double.

Amherst was paced at the plate by Sammy Salustri, who went 3-4 with a RBI. In the circle, Buechler (3-0) went four scoreless innings to earn the win, while Lorena Ukanwa tossed the final three innings for her second save of the spring.

In game two, the Mammoths grabbed the early lead, pushing a run across the plate in the top of the second. Annie Apffel doubled down the line in left field, bringing in Marovitz. Amherst had a chance to add to the lead with the bases loaded and nobody out, but Middlebury pitcher Allison Quigley limited the guests to the one run.

An inning later, the Mammoths made it 2-0 with a RBI single down the right-field line Salustri, while Annie McCluskey singled to left for a three-run lead.

In the top of the sixth, Amherst plated an unearned run on a sacrifice play to center field by Marovitz, increasing the lead to 4-0.

The Mammoths added three more runs in the top of the seventh. Annie Murphy and Tuiskula each drove in runs on ground outs to second base, while Kyra Naftel singled in the game's final run to make it 7-0.

Sarah Freyre went 1-3 with a double for the Panthers, while Quigley (3-4) pitched a complete game. The Panther hurler struck out five in seven innings and yielded seven runs (four earned).

Gina Pagan (11-3) picked up the win, throwing four scoreless innings of relief for Amherst. Ukanwa tossed the first three innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Naftel went 4-5 at the plate and Salustri added to the attack with three base hits.
