  • Five Panthers Receive NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete Honors

    Five Middlebury softball have been honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for their work in the classroom during the 2014-15 year.
  • Spring NESCAC Sportsmanship Team Announced

    The New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its Spring All-Sportsmanship Team for each spring sport sponsored by the conference. The All-Sportsmanship Team is composed of one student-athlete from each institution for each sport and is selected by the players and coaches from their respective team for their positive contributions to sportsmanship. The student-athlete selected must be in good academic standing and a member of the team at the conclusion of the season in order to be eligible for selection.
  • Spring NESCAC Academic Team Released

    The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has announced its 2014-15 Spring All-Academic Selections. To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35. A transfer student must have completed one year of study at the institution. The following are Middlebury’s 89 representatives.
  • Maehr Earns Academic and Regional Honors

    Middlebury College softball player Kat Maehr (Sayville, N.Y.) has been named a Capital One Academic All-District I First-Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Maehr also garnered first-team All-New England Region honors by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The junior is majoring in International Politics/Economics with a 3.52 grade point average.
  • Four Softball Players Named to the All-NESCAC Team

    Four members of the Middlebury College softball team were honored when the league announced its All-Conference teams. Junior Kat Maehr (Sayville, N.Y.) and rookie Allison Quigley (Wilmette, Ill.) were named to the first team, while juniors Neve Stearns (Granby, Conn.) and Carlyn Vachow (St. Louis, Mo.) earned second-team honors. The group helped lead the team to a record of 20-11 in 2015, one win shy of the NESCAC Championship series.
  • Softball Team Knocks Out Bowdoin, Stays Alive in NESCAC Tourney

    Middlebury eliminated Bowdoin from the NESCAC Tournament by a score of 2-0 on Saturday morning. The Panthers (20-10) advanced to take on Williams in another elimination game at 3:00 p.m. The Polar Bears end their season with a record of 27-14.
  • Softball Team Knocked Out of NESCAC Tourney

    The Middlebury softball team saw its season come to an end with a 6-3 loss to Williams in a NESCAC Tournament game played at Tufts. The Panthers had defeated Bowdoin earlier in the day to stave off elimination, but were unable to advance to Sunday’s final. Middlebury ends the season with a 20-11 mark. The Ephs (30-6) will need to take two from Tufts on Sunday to capture the title.
  • Softball Drops Game One 2-0 to Tufts at NESCAC Tourney

    The Middlebury softball team dropped game one of the NESCAC Tournament, falling 2-0 to three-time defending champion Tufts in Medford, Massachusetts. The Panthers (19-10) return to action on Saturday when they take on Bowdoin, who fell in 10 innings to Williams in the day's second game, at 10:00 a.m. The Jumbos (39-0) will take on the the Ephs at 12:30 p.m.
  • Softball Team Heads to NESCAC Championship

    The 2015 NESCAC Softball Championship returns to Tufts for the seventh time, as the No. 1 seed from the East Division welcomes Bowdoin, Williams and Middlebury to Spicer Field. Game one gets underway in Medford, Massachusetts on Friday with the host Jumbos taking on Middlebury at 2:30 p.m. The Ephs and the Polar Bears will battle in the nightcap beginning at 5:00 p.m. Action continues on Saturday, May 2, and concludes on Sunday, May 3.
  • Softball Drops Game at Wesleyan - Qualifies For NESCAC Tournament

    The Middlebury softball team completed its regular season with a 2-1 loss at Wesleyan in a make-up game played on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers had won the first two games of the series on March 28, 4-3 and 7-1. Middlebury (19-9, 6-6) earns the second seed in the NESCAC West and will visit the top-seeded NESCAC East squad, Tufts, in the first game of the NESCAC Tournament on May 1.
  • Softball Sweeps Pair From Plymouth State In Home Finale

    Middlebury won its final two home games of 2015, topping Plymouth State 1-0 and 9-1, as the latter went only six innings. The hosts improve to 19-8 for the season and play their final regular season game on the road against NESCAC West opponent Wesleyan on Sunday. Plymouth State (12-16) hosts a pair of games against Little East rival Eastern Connecticut on Saturday.

    When Paul Sommers came to begin his teaching career at Middlebury nearly 40 years ago, he didn’t envision himself sitting outside on chilly spring afternoons watching softball. Now in his 10th year as the Faculty Affiliate for the Panther softball team, the Paige-Wright Professor of Economics continues to enjoy time spent as an academic resource and an all-weather fan.
  • Softball Drops 3-2 Decision to Williams
    April 19, 2015
    Williams won a 3-2 game over Middlebury, capping a delayed, three-game series sweep over the Panthers in NESCAC West action. The first two games, both won by the Ephs (23-5, 7-2), back on April 3, keep Williams atop of the NESCAC West standings with three divisional games to play, while the Panthers (17-8, 6-5) have one more conference game to play against Wesleyan to determine their final divisional seeding.
  • Softball Takes Two From Amherst, Wins Series

    Middlebury swept a pair of games from Amherst (13-10, 3-5) on Saturday afternoon, taking two of three from the Jeffs in a key NESCAC West series in Vermont. The Panthers held on for a 5-4 win in game one, before earning an 11-3 win in a six-inning second game. Middlebury (17-7, 6-4) and Amherst both return to action on Sunday when they host NESCAC West make-up games. The Panthers will host Williams in a single game beginning at 2:00 p.m., while the Jeffs host Hamilton at the same time.
  • Softball Drops Series Opener to Amherst
    April 17, 2015
    Middlebury lost the opening game of a NESCAC West series to visiting Amherst 3-2. The Panthers had the tying run on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not plate the runner on either occasion. Middlebury (15-7, 5-4) return on Saturday against the Jeffs (13-8, 3-3) in a twin-bill scheduled to start at noon.
  • Panther Softball Sweeps Both Ends of Twinbill at Castleton State
    April 15, 2015
    Middlebury swept both ends of a doubleheader against host Castleton State, capping the second victory with two runs in the top of the eighth for a 5-4 extra-inning win. With a 7-0 shutout triumph in the opener, the Panthers improve to 15-6 overall and will host Amherst on Friday for game one of a pivotal three-game NESCAC West series.
  • Softball Takes Game Three at Hamilton, Wins Series

    Middlebury won game three of its NESCAC West series with Hamilton (9-13, 4-4), claiming the rubber game by a score of 1-0 in 10 innings. The Panthers (13-6, 4-3) return to action on Wednesday with a pair of games at Castleton State.
  • Softball Splits A Pair at Hamilton

    The Middlebury softball team (12-6, 3-3) split a pair of NESCAC West games with Hamilton (9-12, 4-3) on Saturday, winning game one 9-1 in five innings before falling in the nightcap, 6-2. The games were played at Utica College with game three slated for the Hamilton campus at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Softball Sweeps Both Ends of Doubleheader Against Johnson State

    The Middlebury softball team swept both ends of a doubleheader on a cool and blustery Tuesday afternoon against in-state foe Johnson State. The Panthers, who were the visitors on the scoreboard, were victorious in game one by a 5-4 score in eight innings, and cruised in the nightcap 17-0 in five innings. The twinbill was originally scheduled to be played at Johnson State but moved to Middlebury due to field conditions.
  • Softball Drops a Pair to Williams

    Middlebury (9-5, 2-2) opened its home season on Friday with a pair of NESCAC West games against Williams (14-3, 2-0). The Ephs battled back to take game one 6-4, while scoring late for a 7-0 win in second game of the day. The teams hope to play game three of the series on Saturday, with weather likely playing a factor.
  • Quigley Named NESCAC, ECAC Regional Pitcher of the Week

    Middlebury College softball player Allison Quigley (Wilmette, Ill.) has been named both the NESCAC and ECAC Division III New England Region Pitcher of the Week. The rookie posted a 4-1 record with four games started and six appearances last week, including a pair of NESCAC West wins over Wesleyan.
  • Softball Wins Two NESCAC Games at Wesleyan

    After earning a 7-3 mark in Florida, the Middlebury softball team (9-3, 2-0) returned to the northeast for a pair of NESCAC West games against Wesleyan (6-8, 0-2) on Sunday at Hand High School. The Panthers edged the Cardinals 4-3 in game one, before taking the nightcap by a 6-1 score. The games were played at Hand High School in Madison, Connecticut.
  • Panther Softball Goes 1-1, Finishes Southern Swing 7-3

    The Middlebury softball team concluded its trip to Clermont, Florida with an overall record of 7-3. The Panthers finished up play on Thursday, splitting a pair of contests. Middlebury downed Wisconsin-Oshkosh 6-4 in eight innings, before falling 7-2 to Elmhurst in its second game of the day. The Panthers return north to visit Wesleyan for a three game series on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Softball Team Moves to 6-2 With a Pair of Victories

    The Panther softball team won two more games on Wednesday, topping Thomas 11-0 in five innings before taking a 7-3 victory over Carleton in Florida. Middlebury wraps-up its spring break schedule on Thursday when it takes on Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Elmhurst.
  • Softball Drops Two In Florida

    The Middlebury softball team played two more games on Monday, facing Colby and MIT in Clermont, Florida. The Panthers suffered their first two losses of the season, moving to 4-2 with a 4-2 setback at the hands of Colby and an 8-1 loss to MIT. Middlebury is off on Tuesday before returning to action against Thomas and Carleton on Wednesday.
  • Softball Tops Union & Wellesley to Move to 4-0

    The Middlebury softball team was back in action on Sunday with a pair of games played in Clermont, Florida. The Panthers (4-0) opened the day with a 5-2 win over Union (0-3) before defeating Wellesley by a 4-3 count later in the day. Middlebury returns to action on Monday when it faces Colby and MIT.
  • Softball Opens Season With a Pair of Wins

    The Middlebury softball team opened up its season in stellar fashion by picking up a pair of wins on its first day on an outdoor diamond. The Panthers earned a 5-4 win over Buffalo State (2-3) in the opener, before downing Kalamazoo (2-3) by a 2-1 score in the second game of the day. The contests took place in Clermont, Florida, where Middlebury will be back in action on Sunday taking on Union and Wellesley.
  • 2015 Softball Season Preview

    The Middlebury College softball team enters the 2015 season after coming up a win short of the NESCAC Championship game a year ago. The Panthers finished the season with 19-16 mark and will look to vie for the NESCAC crown this spring. The team not only had a successful season on the field, but in the classroom as well. The Panthers were recognized by the NFCA for having the sixth-highest combined GPA among all Division III schools.
