At the NESCAC Tourney, Julia Brenta pitched a two-hit shutout and Courtney Bongiolatti had two hits that led to both runs as Tufts topped Middlebury, 2-0. Only one Middlebury runner reached second base against Brenta on the afternoon. She twice walked Panther runners to lead off the second and third innings, but Middlebury could not take advantage. McCarthy was also effective, but Bongiolatti came through twice. She led off the fourth by popping a triple down the right field line and scored when Erica Bailey hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the sixth, Danielle Lopez led off with her second single of the game. After she was sacrificed to second, Lopez scored on a double by Bongiolatti. Rookie Christine Grimaldi (Westport, Conn.) and junior Kathryn Hurd (Fairfield, Conn.) had the Middlebury hits. McCarthy allowed six hits and struck out four in six innings.
Following a day of rained out play, Middlebury saw its season come to an end with a 7-1 loss to Trinity. Sara Dougherty went the distance for Trinity without allowing an earned run despite giving up 12 hits, four walks and having the Bantam defense make four errors behind her. The Bantams opened up a 5-0 lead with a four-run fourth, sending 10 batters to the plate. Trinity added single runs in the fifth and the seventh to seal the win.
Dougherty worked out of danger all game as Middlebury stranded 14 runners on base. The Panthers had at least two runners on base in every inning except the seventh. Trinity recorded two outs at the plate and stranded 10 Middlebury runners in scoring position. The Panthers scored their lone run in the sixth when Cannella doubled and scored. She finished with two hits, as did senior Lauren Guza (LaCanada, Calif.) and Sargent. Grimaldi led Middlebury with a 4 for 4 performance, including two doubles.
