Big Second Days Earns Ski Team Third Place At Williams

Middlebury had a strong second-day showing at the Williams Carnival, moving from a fifth place tie to sole possession of third place overall. Vermont won the carnival with 970 points, followed by Dartmouth (834), Middlebury (640) and Colby (588). Hig Roberts earned his second-straight win in the giant slalom to pace the men’s alpine team, which finished second in the event. The nordic events took place at Prospect Mountain while the alpine events were held at Jiminy Peak.

Roberts covered the GS course in 1:42.81, earning his second GS victory and seventh-straight top-five finish. Christopher McKenna continued his strong season, finishing the event in fifth place with a time of 1:44.27. It was his fourth top-five finish and seventh top-10 effort of the season. Rounding out the scorers was Nick Bailey, who earned his second-consecutive top 10 finish with a time of 1:45.25 to place 10th.

The women’s squad also turned in a strong performance on Saturday, finishing tied for fourth place. Yina Moe-Lange paced the group with her sixth top 10 finish of the season, placing eighth in 1:47.47. Elle Gilbert earned her best finish of the year, turning in a 15th-place finish with a time of 1:47.99. Kara Shaw rounded out the Panther scorers with a time of 1:50.31, good for 26th place.

benlustgartenaction13The men’s nordic team had a much-improved showing on Saturday, much-in-part to a strong finish from Ben Lustgarten, leading them to a fourth-place finish. In his first individual race since returning from the U23 World Championships, the senior finished fourth overall in the 10K classic with a time of 29:29. Patrick McElravey finished the event in 22nd place (31:19) for the Panthers, followed by Adam Luban in 35th (32:12).

Heather Mooney earned her seventh top-10 finish this season, leading the women by placing sixth (17:05) in the 5K classic race. Stella Holt was next for the Panthers in 18th place (17:23), while Kaitlin Fink came in 43rd (18:43).
