Part two of the UVM Carnival began today as nordic sprint races were contested at the Trapp Family Lodge with alpine events completed in January. The Middlebury women won the sprint event, placing three skiers in the top 10. Several racers on the college circuit are away competing in the U23 World Championships in Italy, including Middlebury’s Ben Lustgarten. Action resumes on Sunday with day two of the nordic portion of the carnival.
Stella Holt led the Middlebury women with a career-best third place finish, covering the course in 3:51.6. Just behind her in fourth place was Heather Mooney, who trailed by just .1 second, finishing with a time of 3:51.7. Also placing in the top 10 was Kelsey Phinney, who came in with a time of 3:57.2, good for 10th place.
Austin Cobb paced the men’s squad in their sprint race, placing 10th overall with a time of 3:13.8. Patrick McElravey was next for Middlebury in 18th place with a time of 3:17.3, followed by Jack Steele in 25th (3:20).
