Former Middlebury College athlete Hedda Berntsen '99 has earned a silver medal in the women's ski cross freestyle skiing event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, B.C. The Norwegian battled her way through four rounds to advance to the finals, where she finished behind only gold medalist Ashleigh McIvor of Canada. Berntsen was a member of the alpine ski team while at Middlebury, also competing in women's soccer and track.
Berntsen, who won a bronze medal for Norway in the slalom at the 2001 Alpine World Championships, has also competed in ski jumping, cross country, moguls and telemark. In ski cross, she was the silver medalist at the 2008 Winter X Games.
Hedda is the daughter of Dag Berntsen, Class of 1973 at Middlebury, who also competed for the Panther ski team.
