The Middlebury nordic and alpine ski teams opened up their carnival circuit this weekend with a trip to Maine for the Bates Carnival. The Panthers finished fourth overall (689), with Dartmouth (902) winning, followed by UVM (845) and UNH (735). The women's GS team and the men's slalom squad each won their respective races.
On day one in the women's GS, senior Mattie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) finished second in the event with a time of 2:39.31. Sophomore Tasha Woodworth (Carlisle, Mass.) was next for the Panthers in sixth place (2:40.96), followed by sophomore Nicole Dvorak (Essex Junction, Vt.) in ninth (2:41.89). Sophomore Lindsay Kraft (Coldstream, B.C.) came in 14th (2:42.31) for the Panthers, while senior Tucker Burton (Breckenridge, Colo.) placed 17th (2:42.45).
Ford again paced the team in the slalom, finishing fifth overall with a time of 1:50.62. Burton came in 10th (1:51.96), followed by Woodworth in 13th (1:53.19) and junior Leah McLaughry (Norwich, Vt.) in 14th (1:53.74).
Senior Andrew Wagner (Traverse City, Mich.) paced the men's squad in the GS, placing fifth overall with a time of 2:34.57. Next for the Panthers was junior Jonathan Hunter (McAfee, N.J.) in 12th (2:35.50), followed by junior Brian Swartz (Mendon, Vt.) in 29th (2:39.12).
Wagner was disqualified in the slalom, as Hunter paced the team with a 23rd place finish in 1:46.30. Swartz was next in 27th (1:47.64), followed by first-year racer David Dodge (Williston, Vt.) in 35th (1:56.02).
First-year racer Elise Moody-Roberts (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had a strong opening weekend for the nordic women, placing second in the 5K classical with a time of 15:53. Senior Robyn Anderson (Stowe, Vt.) was next for Middlebury in fifth place (16:01), followed by senior Cassidy Edwards (Glen Arbor, Mich.) in 11th (16:16) and sophomore Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) in 19th (16:26).
Moody-Roberts followed that up with a fifth place finish (46:15) the next day in the 15K freestyle race. Anderson finished the race in 10th place (47:23), while senior Kate Barton (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) came in 17th (48:04).
Rookie Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) and junior Mike Mommsen (St. Louis Park, Minn.) paced the men's team in the 10K classical, placing 14th (27:51) and 15th (27:56) respectively. First-year racer Noah Brautigam (Richmond, Vt.) rounded out Middlebury scorers in 24th place (28:28).
Marston paced the group in the 20K freestyle with a 25th place finish in 54:42. Sophomore Graham Egan (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) finished 29th (54:59), while senior Anders Meyer (Lincolnshire, Ill.) came in 30th (55:03) to round out the Panthers top three finishers.
