The Middlebury College ski teams hosted the Middlebury Carnival over the weekend, as the Panthers placed second overall to Vermont. The alpine events were held at the Snow Bowl, while the nordic events were moved to the Craftsbury Nordic Center due to a lack of snow.
Middlebury's Megan Hughes (Killington, Vt.) dominated both alpine events, capturing both the slalom and giant slalom races. The sophomore won the GS with a time of 2:12.69, while finishing with a time of 1:34.47 in the slalom race.
Sophomore Krissy Poehling (LaCrosse, Wis.) finished seventh (2:16.26) in the GS for the Panthers, while sophomore Dorothy Muirhead (Crested Butte, Colo.) came in 14th (2:18.04). First-year skier Mattie Ford (Plymouth, N.H.) was Middlebury's second finisher in the slalom, placing fourth with a time of 1:35.48. First-year racer Gabrielle Govan (Katonah, N.Y.) was the Panther's third scorer, placing 24th in 1:42.68.
On the men's side, Andrew Wagner (Traverse City, Mich.) turned in a couple of impressive performances on the weekend. The rookie finished second in the GS with a time of 2:07.30, while also earning a second place finish in the slalom (1:29.54).
Placing fourth in the GS was sophomore Richard Davisson (Bethel, Maine) in 2:07.68, while sophomore Clayton Reed (Stowe, Vt.) came in ninth (2:08.86). Junior Andrew Everett (Andover, Mass.) turned in an impressive third place finish in the slalom (1:29.64), while Davisson placed 18th (1:32.44).
At the nordic races, senior Garrott Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) was a force for the men, winning the 20k freestyle race, while placing second in the 10k classical. Kuzzy won the 20k by a convincing 31 seconds with a finishing time of 56:19. His time of 27:56 was 22 seconds off the winning pace in the 10k.
Sophomore Jimmy Ades (Shelburne, Vt.) was next for Middlebury in the 20k race, finishing ninth with a time of 59:24. First-year racer Dane Johnson (LaGrande, Ore.) was Middlebury's third scorer in 13th place with a final time of 1:00.30.
Senior Jake Whitcomb (Worthington, Mass.) finished eighth (28:16) for Middlebury in the 10k, while first-year racer Tim Reynolds (Bristol, Vt.) placed ninth (28:17).
Junior Evelyn Dong (Wayland, Mass.) turned in a top performance for the women on Saturday, winning the 15k freestyle race with a time of 47:33. First-year racer Cassidy Edwards (Glen Arbor, Mich.) finished in fifth place (49:51) for the Panthers, while junior Jenny Hamilton (Aspen, Colo.) came in seventh (50:45).
Edwards led the team in the 5k classical, finishing seventh with a time of 16:04. Placing 10th was Hamilton in 16:20, followed by senior Taylor Leach (Old Forge, N.Y.) in 20th (16:57).
