The Middlebury cross country teams started their respective 2019 seasons Saturday by winning the Vermont Tech Invitational. The women, ranked 17th nationally, finished with 16 points to win the title over Norwich (53), while the 22nd-ranked men claimed the team title scoring 15 points ahead of the in-state Cadets (50). The Panthers return to action next Saturday when they travel to Maine for the Bates Invitational. The men's race starts at 11:00 a.m., while the women's competition begins at 12:00 p.m.
During the men's 8K race consisting of 39 participants, Panther scorers filled 10 of the first 11 positions in the final results. Henry Fleming led Middlebury with a winning run of 28:04, while Jack Litowitz was next in second place (28:06). Quinlan McGaugh wound up in the third spot (28:09), while Connor Montgomery (fourth, 28:16) and Alexander Kessler (fifth, 28:20) rounded out the top-five scoring places.
Leading the Panther women in the 5K race comprised of 38 women was Talia Ruxin with a winning time of 19:32, as Middlebury claimed seven of the top-eight spots in the race. Meg Wilson finished second in 20:10, while Chloe Smith was next in third place (20:19). Phoebe Colvin Oehmig in fourth (20:26) and Grace Kirkpatrick two spots behind in sixth (21:18) completed the scorers.
