The Panther cross country teams took part in the Purple Valley Classic hosted by Williams on Saturday afternoon. The women won the 16-team race, while the men were third among 16 schools competing.
The Middlebury women, ranked first in the nation, won the race by 11 points over fourth-ranked Williams. The Panthers placed three in the top seven, while showing their depth with nine racers in the top 33. Junior Addie Tousley (Kensington, Md.) was the Panthers’ top finisher, placing second overall with a time of 22:26. Just four seconds behind in third place was senior Margo Cramer (Seattle, Wash.), followed by sophomore Emily Attwood (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) in seventh place (22:41). Senior Chelsea Ward-Waller (Washington, D.C.) finished the race in 15th place (23:12), while first-year racer Katie Carlson (Princeton, Mass.) rounded out the Middlebury scorers with an 18th place finish (23:19).
The 14th-ranked men turned in a solid performance as well, topping 10th-ranked N.Y.U. to earn a third place finish. Senior Michael Schmidt (Wilmette, Ill.) was the top D3 racer at the event, finishing second overall with a time of 26:27. First-year racer Kevin Wood (Lincolnshire, Ill.) earned a 12th place finish (27:01), followed by senior Sam Miller (Needham, Mass.) in 16th place (27:04). Sophomore Nate Sans (Princeton, Mass.) earned an 18th place finish in 27:05, while junior Patrick Hebble (Sudbury, Mass.) finished 23rd (27:14).
