The Middlebury College cross country teams competed at the State Meet hosted by Castleton on Saturday. Both the Middlebury women's and men's teams placed second to the University of Vermont in the races. The Catamounts, who don't normally attend the meet, brought their top runners to the race for the first time since '86. The Panthers were resting several of their top runners on both the men's and women's sides.
First-year racer Elise Moody-Roberts (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) led the Panther women with a second place finish overall in 18:52. Classmate Cate Brown (Hanover, N.H.) came in fifth in 19:18, followed by sophomore Kaitlynn Saldanha (Scarborough, Maine) in ninth place (19:42). Rookie Chelsea Ward-Waller (San Antonio, Texas) placed 10th (19:43), while first-year racer Margo Cramer (Seattle, Wash.) rounded out the scorers in 13th place (19:59).
First-year racer Michael Schmidt (Wilmette, Ill.) paced the men's team, coming in second overall with a time of 27:08. Finishing in fifth place was junior Peter Hoffman (Rochester, Minn.) with a time of 27:46, followed by sophomore Nat Nelson (Concord, N.H.) in eighth place (28:03). Sophomore Stanis Moody-Roberts (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) came in ninth place (28:05) for the Panthers, while junior Christopher Free (Wallingford, Pa.) rounded out the pack in 10th place (28:14).
