Lewis took over the reins of the men’s and women's squash programs in the spring of 2015 and enters his fifth season in 2019-20. He came to Middlebury from the Potomac School in McLean, Virginia, where he has served as the head coach for six seasons. A 1993 graduate of NESCAC institution Trinity College, Lewis is just the fifth coach for the women’s program since 1976 and the third for the men since it became a varsity program in 2007.
Lewis spent six years at the Potomac School before coming to Middlebury as the head varsity coach for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. While there, he led the girls varsity high school squash team to three regional championships in the past four years, while coaching the boys’ varsity high school team to four regional championships in the past five years including three undefeated seasons. During the 2013-14 season, both the boys’ and girls’ teams placed in the top 16 in the country for the first time in The Potomac School’s squash history.
As a player at Trinity, he served as the Bantams’ men’s team captain during his final year. A season before, Lewis was selected as an All American by the US Squash Intercollegiate Association. A multi-sport athlete, he was named to the New England East/West All-Star Lacrosse Team as a sophomore.
After graduation, Lewis was a member of the U.S. Men’s National Team where he was ranked in the top five in the country and represented the U.S. at the Pan American Federation Championships in Medellin, Colombia and Mexico City, Mexico. Lewis joined the Professional Squash Association World Tour from 1995 to 2002, where he achieved the No. 2 ranking in the U.S., the No. 106 ranking in the world and competed on the Professional Squash Association World Tour. During that period, Lewis was named the United States Olympic Committee Athlete of the Year.
Lewis began his coaching career in 2000 when he served as the U.S. Men’s Junior National Coach, preparing teams to participate in the World Junior Championships in Milan, Italy and Chennai, India. He has also been the head squash professional at the Union Boat Club in Boston and the Executive Director of the DC Squash Academy in Washington, D.C.
Lewis has collegiate coaching experience at Georgetown University where he led the Hoyas’ men’s and women’s newly-created teams to their highest national rankings of 29th and 24th, respectively. He is also the U.S. Squash Association’s Mid-Atlantic Region Regional Squad Head Coach for the top 13, 15 and 17 boys and girls in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Aside from coaching, Lewis served as chairperson of the U.S. Squash Racquets Association Men’s Committee from 2002 through 2006 in addition to being a board member of the U.S. Squash Racquets Association from 1997 until 2003.
