Williams scored the game's only goal in the 56th minute, as the sixth-seeded Ephs (9-5-2) knocked off third-seeded Middlebury (10-3-3) in a NESCAC Quarterfinal contest on South Street Field. The game came just four days after Middlebury defeated Williams 2-0 in the NESCAC regular-season finale for both teams.
Williams came out with immediate pressure early on, earning four corner kicks in the game's first 2:42 of play. Middlebury fought off the sluggish start as the rest of the half was played relatively even.
Halftime saw the contest delayed two hours due to weather, as the teams returned to the field in a scoreless tie. Eric Hirsch scored the game winner at the 56:02 mark, his first goal of the season. Scatt Macdonald sent a free kick from 35 yards away toward the Middlebury goal, where keeper Matthew Hyer knocked the skidding shot down. The ball bounced around the box briefly before Hirsch deposited it into the right side of the net.
Neither team threatened to score throughout the remainder of the contest, as the Ephs came away with the 1-0 victory.
Aaron Schein was forced to make no saves in goal to earn the win for Williams, while Hyer made four stops for the hosts.
The loss snaps a 10-game (8-0-2) unbeaten streak for the Panthers. The goal allowed broke a streak of 490:31 for Hyer and the Panther defense.
