Middlebury picked up its first win of the season as the Panthers (1-3) earned a 2-1 road win over St. John’s (2-8) in the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout consolation game at Plattsburgh. Middlebury returns to action next week with road games at Southern Maine at the University of New England.
Middlebury nearly doubled its opponent’s shot output, holding a 41-22 advantage on the night. J.D. Vermette scored the first of his career 8:57 into the game, with Chris Steele earning an assist.
The Panthers held a 1-0 lead through the second period and into the third, but the Johnnies tied the game on a goal from Mike Wallgren on the power play at 10:44.
Middlebury kept coming, netting the game-winner with just 2:30 remaining, as Charlie Strauss found the back of the net with an assist going to Trevor Pollock.
Nick BonDurant earned his first career win with 21 saves between the pipes, while Adam Andersson made 39 stops for the Johnnies.
Following the tournament, Tucker Donahoe was named to the all-tournament team.
