Middlebury suffered its first loss of the season to Plattsburgh at the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout at Norwich. The Panthers will take on Potsdam in the consolation game on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
Plattsburgh struck first when Pier-Luc Belanger teamed up with Shane Remenda for the only goal of the first period at 12:05. Middlebury evened the score when John Sullivan took a drop pass from Mickey Gilchrist and found the back of net at 1:20 in the second period. The Cardinals went ahead 2-1 with 38 seconds remaining in the period when Kevin Galan scored the first of back-to-back goals with Rick Janco providing the assist. Galan scored again at 4:01 into the final period with Andrew Willock assisting to make it a 3-1 game. Remenda extended the lead to 4-1 midway through the period off the assist from Ryan Busby. At 15:08, Middlebury's Richie Fuld cut the lead to 4-2 when he converted a pass from Robert MacIntyre. The Cardinals were able to hold off a Panthers' rally and they left the ice with the two-goal victory.
Middlebury had a slight edge in shots-on-goal at 23-19. Plattsburgh netminder Chris Molinaro tallied 21 saves, while Middlebury goaltender Ross Cherry made 15 stops.
