Middlebury captured its own tournament as they earned a 4-1 win over Amherst in the Holiday Classic Final. Panther netminder Doug Raeder stopped 47 of 49 shots in the tournament, allowing just a pair of goals to earn M.V.P. honors.
Middlebury opened the scoring with its first shot of the game at 8:02 as Kyle Koziara scored with a blast from the top of the zone. Amherst tied the game just 1:16 later as Brandon Zangel's shot from the right side was tipped in by A.J. Greco for a power play goal. The Panthers regained the lead with another power play goal at 14:03 as Brett Shirreffs carried the puck in from the left wing and made a nice move before scoring with a backhander.
Middlebury increased its lead to 3-1 at 7:39 of the second period as Scott Bartlett stuffed home a loose puck on the goal line. Jamie McKenna scored the only goal of the third period at 11:13 on a rebound.
Josh Fillman made 25 saves in goal for Amherst, while Raeder made 20 stops in goal for Middlebury. Chris Helms (S. Maine), Brad Baldelli (Babson), Brett Shirreffs (Middlebury), Jeff Landers (Amherst), Scott Bartlett (Middlebury) and A.J. Greco (Amherst) were all named to the All-Tournament team.
