Mickey Gilchrist tallied four points on a pair of goals and two assists to lead Middlebury over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 9-1. The Beacons fall to 0-20-2 and 0-15-1 in ECAC East play, while the Panthers, who are ranked number two in the nation by USCHO.com, improve to 18-1-2 and 14-1-1 in the NESCAC standings.
Following 13:32 of scoreless hockey, Middlebury tallied three goals in a period of 2:31 with Gilchrist getting things started with his first goal of the night at 13:32. Darwin Hunt followed at 15:53 to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead and Jamie McKenna struck just 10 seconds later to give Middlebury a 3-0 first period cushion. Jed McDonald wasted no time adding to the Panther's total, scoring just 25 seconds into the second stanza for a 4-0 advantage. UMass Boston got on the board when Ron Hernandez took a feed from Billy Langmaid and scored on the right side at 11:34 of the second period to make it 4-1. Hunt tallied his second goal of the night for Middlebury at 15:09 of the middle period and Jamie McKenna followed with his second goal of the night and his 15th of the season just 37 seconds later for a 6-1 margin. Eric LaFreniere kept the pressure on for the Panthers with a goal coming with just 11 seconds left in the second period. Leonard Badeau got into the scoring act as well for Middlebury with his first collegiate goal at the 7:02 mark of the third period for an 8-1 lead and Gilchrist capped the game as he opened it, with a goal at 9:06 of the final period.
Middlebury's McKenna ended the night with a pair of goals and an assist, while Hunt also picked up two scores. Scott Bartlett tallied three assists and Jed McDonald registered three points with a goal and two assists on the night for the Panthers.
