Middlebury scored three first period goals on its way to a 7-2 win over Amherst. John Dawson, Kevin Cooper and Brian Phinney each had two goals in the win. The Panthers return to action on Tuesday night as they host Skidmore at 7:00 p.m.
Dawson opened the scoring at 7:38 as he scored a power play goal on a wrap-around. A.J. Greco tied the game for Amherst as he put in a rebound following a shot from Scott Aldrich. Cooper made it a 2-1 game with a shot down low on the power play from Darwin Hunt. Dawson increased the lead to 3-1 with a penalty shot just 19 seconds later after the net was intentionally knocked off its moorings.
Cooper gave the Panthers a 4-1 lead just 2:04 into the second period as he ripped home a slap shot from the right wing after Foote won the face-off back to him. Phinney struck just 20 seconds into the third period as he took a feed from Cooper in the corner before converting. The duo combined again at 7:22 as Phinney snapped in a shot from the high slot. Shady Young added a goal at 11:57 before Josh Hoffman ripped a shot from the right face-off circle at 16:20 to make it a 7-2 final.
