Middlebury scored four second period goals on its way to an 8-1 win over Skidmore. The Panthers entered the game as the nation's top-ranked team in the latest Division III national poll.
The Panthers opened the scoring 2:49 into the period as Mike Velez found Kevin Cooper with a drop pass before the senior buried it with a low wrister. Cooper made it a 2-0 game as he roofed a shot on a breakaway. Middlebury took a 3-0 lead on a rebound goal by John Sales at 4:19 of the second period. Adam Foote, John Dawson and Shady Young scored goals in the final 7:56 of the period to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead after two. Levi Doria made it a 7-0 game before Tim Ryan put Skidmore on the board at the 10:13 mark with a snap shot from the slot. Dawson answered with his second goal of the game just 50 seconds later to make it an 8-1 final.
Yen-I Chen made 17 saves in goal for the Panthers, while Mike Mansfield made 35 stops for the Thoroughbreds.
