Middlebury moved to 9-3 on the year with a 61-50 win over the University of New England in the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Panthers return to action on Tuesday when they play the second game of a double header at 7:30 p.m. against Colby-Sawyer in the Pepin Gym.
Middlebury jumped out to a 16-8 lead before a 9-0 run, sparked by five points from Matt McManus gave UNE its first and only lead of the game at 17-16. The Panthers answered with a 12-1 run, behind eight points from Chris Dowd, to take a 29-18 lead with 3:40 left in the first half.
UNE cut the lead to four early in the second half, but that's as close as they'd come as Middlebury kept a lead of 10 or more for a majority of the second half.
Dowd and Sam Daly led the team with 13 points apiece on the day, while Mike Walsh scored seven and grabbed 10 rebounds. McManus led UNE with 13, while Isaac Stickney scored a dozen.
