//Middlebury is in second place after one day of racing at the Bates Carnival. Sophia Laukli earned another victory for the nordic women to highlight day one. Alpine racing are being held at Sunday River, while the Nordic athletes are competing at Black Mountain. Action continues on Saturday with the freestyle and giants slalom events.
On the alpine side, Tim Gavett had the best finish of the day, placing second overall in the slalom. Two spots back in fourth place was Justin Alkier, who earned his fifth fourth-place finish of the season. Rounding out the squad was Michel Macedo, who came in 24th place.
Laukli's victory (45:50) was the fourth-consecutive carnival race she has captured and also the lengthiest (15K classic). Annika Landis made it five-straight events in the top six by placing fifth overall with a time of 46:37. Alexandra Lawson rounded out the trio in eighth place, covering the course in 47:06, as the Panthers placed second in the event.
The men finished third in the 20K classic, led by a fourth-place effort by Peter Wolter (57:40), who has earned a spot in the top-eight in every race this season. Behind him were Samuel Hodges (1:00.03) and Willson Moore (1:00.08), who came in 13th and 14th respectively.
