Middlebury sits in third place after one day of competition at the 90th annual Middlebury College Carnival. The Panthers finished third in all events, with a second place effort from the men’s slalom team. UVM leads after day one with 454 points, followed by Dartmouth (443) and Middlebury (385). The teams are back at it on Saturday with alpine events beginning at 9:15 a.m. and nordic races getting underway at 10:00 a.m.
Annie Pokorny picked up her second 5K classic win of the season at Rikert on Friday morning. The Panther sophomore covered the course in 15:32, nearly 20 seconds ahead of her nearest competition. Heather Mooney was Middlebury's next finisher in 17th place, coming in with a time of 17:03. Hilary Rich rounded out the Panther scorers, placing 25th overall in 17:27.
On the men's side, Ben Lustgarten led the Panther men in the 10K classic, finishing fifth overall with a time of 26:25. Dylan McGarthwaite was next for Middlebury in 15th place (27:25), followed by Austin Cobb in 24th (27:46).
At the Snow Bowl, a three-four finish from Andrew McNealus and Hig Roberts paced the Panthers in the slalom event. McNealus came in with a time of 1:35.32, while Roberts was just behind in 1:35.40. Liam Mulhern rounded out Middlebury’s point-earners with a 15th place finish in 1:37.16.
The women also boasted a pair of top 10 finishers with Mary Sackbauer in eighth (1:42.02) and Katelyn Barclay in ninth (1:42.10). Kerry Daigle came in 17th overall (1:43.48) to complete the top three.
