The Middlebury College ski team finished third overall at the University of Vermont Carnival. Dartmouth (916) won the event, followed by UVM (735), Middlebury (729) and UNH (698). Senior Patrick Johnson (Anchorage, Alaska) picked up two more wins over the weekend, capturing the 10K classic in 28:16, while earning a win in the 10K free with a time of 24:09, 41 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.
Sophomore Ben Lustgarten (Burlington, Vt.) was Middlebury’s second finisher in both races, placing eighth in both the classic (29:22) and the freestyle (25:19). Sophomore Austin Cobb (Peru, Vt.) rounded out the team’s scorers in the classic in 19th place (30:16), while senior Chase Marston (Charlotte, Vt.) did the same with an 11th place finish (25:37) in the freestyle race.
First-year racer Annie Pokorny (Spokane, Wash.) led the women in both races, finishing eighth in the 5K classic with a time of 16:26. First-year racer Stella Holt (Whitefish, Mont.) came in 14th place (16:54) in the race, while classmate Rachel Hall (Cumberland, Maine) was 16th (16:56). Pokorny was 12th (29:54) in the 10K free, followed by Holt in 18th place (30:09). Senior Sophie McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) rounded out the scorers with a 21st place (30:35) finish.
Sophomore Hig Roberts (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) picked up a win on Saturday, capturing the slalom event with a time of 1:43.31, over one second ahead of the rest of the field. Sophomore Liam Mulhern (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished the race in 13th place (1:47.56), followed by classmate Nick Bailey (Boise, Idaho) in 28th (2:01.10).
In the GS race, the Panthers finished in a pack of three, owning the sixth, seventh and eighth slots in the race. Junior Bryan Shpall (Englewood, Colo.) led the pack with a time of 2:06.92, followed by Roberts (2:06.99) and junior Andrew McNealus (Woodstock, Vt.) (2:07.13).
Rookie Katelyn Barclay (Pittsford, N.Y.) led the women in the GS event with a 14th place finish (2:15.04), followed closely by classmate Mary Sackbauer (Vail, Colo.) in 15th (2:15.05). Fellow rookie Yina Moe-Lang (Sammamish, Wash.) rounded out the scorers with a 23rd place (2:15.74) finish.
Junior Christine Schozer (Winhall, Vt.) earned the team’s top finish in the slalom, completing the event in 1:53.27, good for seventh place. First-year racer Kerry Daigle (Centerville, Mass.) finished the race in 23rd place (1:58.38), followed by Barclay in 24th (1:58.94).
