Baseball Wins Three of Four on the Road Last Week

The Middlebury baseball team posted a 3-1 record during four road games last week. On Thursday, the Panthers broke open a close game with 10 runs over the final three innings for a 12-2 victory in eight innings shortened due to darkness. On Saturday at Emory, Middlebury plated 26 runs in a doubleheader sweep, winning the opening game 10-5 and taking the second contest 16-5. On Sunday, Middlebury saw its modest three-game winning streak come to an end, as the Panthers closed out its series at Emory with an 8-2 setback.

  • Against Rensselaer trailing 2-1 after five innings, the Panthers scored three times in the sixth, seven in the seventh and one more in the eighth for the final 12-2 score.
  • Middlebury pounded out 12 hits with five players each finishing with two apiece. The Panthers also stole eight bases as a team in the victory. Sophomore George Goldstein (Westport, Conn.) earned the win, yielding one run on two hits over three innings of relief.
  • In Saturday’s opening contest at Emory, Middlebury grabbed an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.
  • The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, before the Panthers struck for three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Middlebury added a tally in the ninth, while Emory answered with one in the team’s final at bat for the 10-5 score.
  • Panther senior Colby Morris (Del Mar, Calif.) pitched seven innings for win, allowing three runs on four hits. Junior Hayden Smith (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Henry Strmecki (Wilton, Conn.) led Middlebury's 14-hit attack, as they both went 3-5 with Smith driving in a pair of runs and Strmecki scoring twice.
  • Trailing 3-0 in Saturday’s second game, the Panthers scored four times in the third inning to take the lead for good en route to a 16-5 win.
  • Rookie Alec Ritch (Kentfield, Calif.) and Smith each finished with three hits, juniors Brooks Carroll (Davidson, N.C.) and Andrew Hennings (Oak Park, Ill.) each went 2-2 with Carroll adding four RBI. Sophomore Bobby Sullivan (Ridgewood, N.J.) picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit with a pair of strikeouts.
  • On Sunday, Emory jumped ahead with three runs in the first and added four more in the fourth for a 7-0 lead.
  • Middlebury got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, as senior Sam Graf (Loma, Colo.) singled home Smith, who led off the inning with a walk. The Panthers made it 7-2 in their next at bat, as junior Gray Goolsby (Austin, Texas) doubled and scored on a passed ball.
  • The Panthers hit .329 during the four games last week at the plate, with Smith going 9-19 with two doubles, a triple, eight runs scored and five RBI.
  • With his win in Saturday’s opener against Emory, Morris moved into fourth place by himself on the Panther career list with 14 victories.
  • In Saturday’s second win, Graf singled for the Panthers for his 100th career hit.
