The sixth-ranked Middlebury field hockey team recorded a perfect 3-0 week. In a game rescheduled to Monday at Smith, the Panthers eased past the host Pioneers, 5-1. Staying on the road Saturday, Middlebury returned to NESCAC play with a 4-2 victory at #13 Amherst. Returning to Kohn Field on Sunday, five-first half goals lifted the Panthers to a 7-0 victory over visiting Hamilton.
The Middlebury Men's Tennis Invitational came to an end with the host school boasting a pair of champions in the top-two singles flights on Sunday. Matches were contested outdoors at the Proctor Tennis Courts and indoors on the Nelson Recreation Center courts on the Middlebury campus.
The Middlebury cross country teams swept the Aldrich Invitational on Saturday, as both teams cruised to victories in their only home event of the season. The men placed eight runners in the top nine, while the women owned 15 of the top 16 finishes. The Panthers return to action next Saturday at Williams' Purple Valley Classic.
The Middlebury women's golf team opened up its fall season with a fifth-place finish among 12 teams at the NYU Invitational. Williams won the event with a two-day total of 614, followed by NYU (621), Randolph-Macon (638), Amherst (642) and Middlebury (659). Action took place at the Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, New York.
Williams captured the 32nd Annual Duke Nelson Tournament hosted by Middlebury College. The Ephs shot a 309 on day two to finish with a 614, five strokes ahead of Babson (619). Rensselaer (622) placed third, followed by Salem State (523) and the Panthers in ninth (629). Action took place at the par-71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course on the Middlebury campus.
The Middlebury volleyball team tallied a 2-2 record last week. The Panthers fell on the road Tuesday in a tough five-set match at Union (3-2), and returned home for a 3-1 setback in the NESCAC opener with Bowdoin. On Saturday, Middlebury rebounded and took both ends of its home tri-match with Cortland State (3-2) and Colby-Sawyer (3-0).
The Middlebury men’s soccer team split a pair of of matches last week. On Tuesday, the Panthers tied a program record with 10 goals scored in a 10-0 road victory at Green Mountain at Eagles Game Field. Staying on the road, a goal just 27 seconds into Saturday’s match proved to be the difference in a 1-0 setback to #10 Amherst at Hitchcock Field.
The Middlebury women’s soccer team posted a 1-1 record during two NESCAC weekend matches. On the road Saturday at #18 Amherst, the Jeffs scored with 17 seconds left for a 2-1 victory over the Panthers. Returning home to Dragone Field for a Sunday league match with Hamilton, Middlebury scored three first-half goals in 13:08 on its way to a 4-1 league win.
