Hosting an NCAA Regional last weekend, the second-ranked Middlebury field hockey team advanced to its sixth national semifinal in program history with a 5-1 win over fifth-ranked Ursinus on Sunday afternoon on Kohn Field. The Panthers advanced to the regional final with a 7-0 victory Saturday over the University of New England. With the two wins, Middlebury’s 19 wins (19-1) tie a program record set back in 2003. The Panthers will play The College of New Jersey next Saturday in Lexington, Virginia on the campus of Washington & Lee.
The Middlebury cross country teams competed Saturday in the NCAA New England Regional hosted by Williams College at Mt. Greylock Regional High School. The third-ranked women's team raced to runner-up team honors, scoring 65 points behind only champion and fourth-ranked MIT's 40, and automatically qualified as a team for the NCAA Championships hosted by Wilmington College in southwestern Ohio. The 12th-ranked men finished fifth with 136 points and gained an at-large berth to next Saturday's national meet.
The Middlebury women’s basketball team collected a pair of season-opening wins with victories over Endicott on Saturday by a 67-46 score, and captured the Tyler Tip-Off Tournament title Sunday with a 67-50 victory over host Smith. Sophomore Elizabeth Knox (Falmouth, Mass.) and rookie Sarah Kaufman (Boulder, Colo.), who scored 32 points during Sunday’s win, were both named to the all-tournament team.
The Middlebury men’s basketball team started a season 2-0 for the seventh-straight year with victories over Mitchell on Saturday afternoon by a score of 101-71, and followed that performance Sunday with a win over host University of New England (69-67) to capture the Ramada Roundball Invitational. Senior Dylan Sinnickson (Sands Point, N.Y.) was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, while classmate Hunter Merryman (San Marino, Calif.) also earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
The fourth-ranked Middlebury women’s hockey team produced two wins to open its 2014-15 season. The Panthers came out of the gates quickly for a 7-1 victory Saturday evening, and returned to Chip Kenyon ’85 Arena on Sunday and posted a 2-0 shutout behind 13 saves from senior goalie Madeline Marsh (Kanata, Ont.).
The Middlebury men’s hockey team had a 0-1-1 road weekend to begin its 2014-15 season. The Panthers dropped the season-opening contest Saturday evening by a 6-0 score to Bowdoin. A day later, Middlebury rebounded and earned a 2-2 tie against Colby.
The Panther swimming and diving teams opened up their respective 2014-15 seasons with a road meet against Connecticut College. The Middlebury women were edged by the Camels by a score of 153-127, while the men were defeated by a 172-90 tally.
The Middlebury women's squash team opened up its season by winning two of three matches on a trip to Connecticut. The Panthers opened their season on Saturday with a 9-0 win over Smith in a match played at Wesleyan. Later in the day, Middlebury convincingly defeated the host school by a score of 8-1. On Sunday, the 15th-ranked Panthers were downed 8-1 by second-ranked Trinity.
The Middlebury men's squash team won two of three matches to open the season in Connecticut. The 19th-ranked Panthers faced three teams in the top 25 over the weekend. Middlebury opened with a 9-0 victory over #25 Connecticut College in a contest played at Wesleyan. Later that day, a 6-3 victory was earned over 20th-ranked Wesleyan. The weekend concluded on Sunday as the Panthers fell to #3 Trinity, 8-1.
