
The Middlebury cross country teams swept the Vermont State Championship meets hosted by Vermont Technical College on Saturday afternoon. The fourth-ranked women earned just 24 points in the seven-team meet, 28 points better than second-place Lyndon. The men came in with 21 points, besting second-place St. Michael's by 20.
Sophomore Sam Klockenkemper (Nashville, Tenn.) took home the title for the men's squad, covering the 8K course in 27:31. Senior Charlie Jones (North Haven, Maine) (28:18) and rookies Peter Elkind (Westport, Conn.) (28:40) and Matt Gillis (Hamilton, Mass.) (28:44) comprised spots 4-6 for the Panthers. Junior Luke Carpinello (Delmar, N.Y.) rounded out the team's scorer with an eight-place finish in 29:06.
The women's team placed four of the top-five finishers at the event. Junior Olivia Artaiz (Banks, Ore.) led the group with a runner-up effort, covering the 5K course with a time of 20:27. Placing third was senior Sarah Guth (Wilton, Conn.) in 20:40, while rookie Robin Vincent (Sutton, Vt.) held down the fourth spot, just behind in 20:41. Sophomore Erzie Nagy (Albion, Maine) trailed by just two seconds, earning a time of 20:43 to place fifth overall. Rookie Liesel Robbins (Hanover, N.H.) was the team's final scorer, crossing the line with a seventh-place finish in 20:50.
