The Middlebury volleyball team posted a 1-3 record during a quartet of matches at the UMass-Boston Tournament. During Friday’s action, Whitman edged past the Panthers 3-1, but Middlebury responded with a 3-0 victory over Western Connecticut State. On Saturday, the host Beacons beat the Panthers 3-0, and Salisbury defeated Middlebury 3-0.
In Friday’s opening match, Whitman grabbed the first two sets against the Panthers by scores of 25-15 and 25-21. Middlebury won the third set by a 25-21 tally, but Whitman secured the win via a score of 25-21. Senior Olivia Kolodka (Verona, N.J.) paced the attack with 12 kills and a pair of service aces, while rookie Alice Roberts (Media, Pa.) added nine kills. Sophomore Hannah Blackburn (Chapel Hill, N.C.) dished out 37 assists.
Defensively, four Panthers recorded double-digit dig totals led by senior Lizzy Reed (Cazenovia, N.Y.) with 21. Sophomore Charlotte Devine (Charlottesville, Va.) added 14 digs, while Blackburn chipped in with 11 for a double-double.
Against Western Connecticut State, the Panthers handed the Colonials their first loss of the season (10-1) by set scores of 25-21, 29-27 and 25-20. O. Kolodka led three in double figures with 15 kills, while younger sister and rookie Emily Kolodka (Verona, N.J.) finished with 12 and sophomore Melanie English (Montgomery Village, Md.) added 10. Blackburn set the offense handing out 42 assists.
Reed once again led multiple players with double-digit dig totals, finishing with 22. E. Kolodka posted a double-double with 19 digs. English recorded two block solos and three block assists in the win.
During Saturday’s opening match, Middlebury hung tough with the Beacons for a pair of sets, falling 25-22 and 25-18, before bowing out 25-14 in the third set.
E. Kolodka paced the offensive attack with five kills, while O. Kolodka and Roberts added seven apiece. Blackburn dished out 27 assists in the match, while Lizzy Reed (15 digs) and E. Kolodka (eight digs) paced the defense.
Against Salisbury, Middlebury played the Gulls tight, but came up on the short end of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-19 sets.
O. Kolodka earned six kills in the match, while three others picked up four. Reed led the defense with 14 digs, Blackburn added 11 with seven kils and four service aces, while E. Kolodka had 10 digs.
