The Middlebury women's volleyball team dropped its final two matches at the Union Invitational on Saturday. The Panthers fell to Stevens in the day's first match by a 3-1 tally (24-26, 25-15, 26-24, 25-21), while The College at Brockport earned a four-set triumph over Middlebury in the day's second match (25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17). The Panthers begin NESCAC play next weekend, traveling to Amherst on Friday followed by a match at Trinity a day later.
For her efforts, Becca Raffel was named to the all-tournament team. In four matches, she racked up 64 kills, 44 digs and five services aces.
Against Stevens (7-2), Raffel paced the Panthers with 17 kills to go with 13 digs, while Isabel Sessions had 11 kills and three block assists. Gigi Alper led all player with 19 digs and Emily Kolodka was right behind her with 18. Chellsa Ferdinand directed Middlebury's attack with 38 assists, while Sarah Staver chipped in with four block assists.
In the final match against Brockport, Sessions tallied 15 kills, while Raffel (12 kills) and Eliana Schaefer (10 kills) both finished with double-figure kill totals. With her 12 kills in the match, she became the seventh player in program history to eclipse the 900-kill plateau for her career with 910.
Alper recorded a match-best 18 digs, while Raffel rounded out her double-double with 12. Ferdinand handed out 36 assists to go along with three service aces and eight digs. Schaefer led the Panthers defensively with two block solos and five block assists.
