Fourth-ranked Middlebury scored the first seven goals and never looked back, picking up a 12-5 win over Bates (2-1, 0-1) in the team's season opener. The Panthers (1-0, 1-0) are back at it on Sunday as they visit Springfield for a 1:00 p.m. game.
Casey O'Neill scored the season-opening goal 2:27 into the contest for the Panthers with an assist from Georgia Carroll. Carroll then scored a goal of her own before Kirsten Murphy recorded her first two career tallies. Hollis Perticone made it a 7-0 game with a pair of goals, with a marker from Sara DiCenso sandwiched in between. Bates got on the board with just 38 seconds remaining in the half with a player advantage, when Summer Dias found the back of the net.
Carroll again got things going in the second half as she did in the first, scoring just 1:28 into the second session. Dias struck again for the Bobcats before Carroll netted her third of the game. Grace Getman followed with the first goal of her career as the Panthers led 10-2 with 14:23 remaining. Following a score from Emily Barnard, the Bobcats scored three of the next four tallies, making it a 12-5 final.
Carroll finished with three goals and four assists in the win, while Murphy and Perticone each scored twice. Perticone won four draws on the afternoon, while Evie Keating paced the team with four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Emma Johns caused three turnovers and scooped up four ground balls, while O'Neill finished with three rollers and caused three turnovers. Julia Keith made five saves in goal to pick up the win.
Dias paced Bates with three goals, while Camille Belletete picked up five ground balls and earned five draw controls. Eliza Statile finished with five saves in goal.
