Men’s Tennis Grabs Pair of Flight Championships in Own Invitational

The Middlebury Men's Tennis Invitational has come to an end with the host school boasting a pair of champions in the top-two singles flights on Sunday. Matches were contested outdoors at the Proctor Tennis Courts and indoors on the Nelson Recreation Center courts on the Middlebury campus. The team will return to action next Friday through Sunday it participates in the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Williams.

In the 'A' singles flight, all three Panthers advanced to the semifinal round. A finalist a year ago, Noah Farrell defeated Brian Granoff of Brandeis in the championship match via a 6-0, 6-3 score. Ari Smolyar picked up a pair of victories in the flight over Fergus Scott of Bates (6-1, 6-1) and Rensselaer's Tristan Wise (7-6 (4), 4-2 default) before Granoff edged the Panther in the semifinals. The third Middlebury participant, Palmer Campbell, swept Ryan Bunis of Brandeis in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) and defeated Ben Rosen of Bates (5-7, 6-2, 11-9) before Farrell defeated him in straight sets.   

Middlebury's William de Quant was victorious in the 'B' singles championship. On Saturday, de Quant edged Trinity's Aaron Segel (7-5, 4-6, 10-4) and swept Jackson Kogan of Brandeis (7-5, 6-1). In Sunday's semifinal against Griffin Brockman from Tufts, de Quant needed an extra set (6-1, 5-7, 10-5) before easing past Ben Battle of Tufts in the final (6-2, 6-2).

Also taking part in the 'B' flight were Kyle Schlanger and Timo van der Geest. Both Panthers won their first round match before bowing out in the quarterfinals.

A pair of first-year Panthers in Peter Martin and Cole Sutton took part in the 'C' flight. Martin defeated Bates' Ben Eckardt (4-6, 6-0, 12-10), but lost to the eventual champion in Garrett Weinstein of Tufts in the quarters. Sutton fell in the first round to Bates' Josh Leiner (5-7, 6-1, 10-4).

In the 'D' flight, Middlebury's Jack Welch earned two victories during Saturday's play. He defeated Graham Harris of RPI (4-6, 6-1, 10-8) as well as a hard fought 7-6 (5), 0-6, 10-7 win against Brandeis' Jeff Cherkin. On Sunday, Welch lost to eventual champion Jay Glickman of Tufts.

The Middlebury pair comprised of Farrell and Schlanger advanced to the 'A' doubles semifinal match, but fell to the duo of McKinley Grimes and Sherman Uyeno of RPI by a 9-8 (5) score. The tandem of Smolyar and Campbell defeated Wise and Alain Grullon of RPI in the first round by a 9-8 (1) tally, but lost in the quarterfinals. The duo of de Quant and Allen Jackson were defeated in their opening-round match.

The 'B' doubles flight featured two Panther duos. On Saturday, the team of Sutton and Charlie Oberrender beat RPI's Suryansh Patel and Stephen Baxter (8-3) as well as Leiner and Josh Quijano from Bates (8-5). In Sunday's semifinal, the Panther tandem fell to eventual champion Lucas Pickering and Steven Koulouris from Skidmore. Middlebury's van der Geest and Martin beat Gabriel Osio and Sundar Devakottai of RPI (8-4) but bowed out with an 8-6 setback to Glickman and Ethan Chen of Tufts (8-6).
