Middlebury College junior alpine skier Caroline Bartlett (London, Ont.) was recently honored as the Collegiate Alpine Skier of the Year by the Vermont Alpine Racing Association (VARA) at the organization's annual gala on October 14. This award is presented to a Vermont college or university alpine ski racer for their accomplishments at the regional and national level, for their devotion to the sport of alpine ski racing, for team leadership, camaraderie, sportsmanship and overall character.
"I'm very grateful for this recognition and feeling motivated and excited for the upcoming season," said Bartlett. "I really enjoyed seeing many new and old faces in the Vermont ski community, as well as celebrating Kelly Brush's induction into the VARA Hall of Fame. The college circuit in Vermont is lucky to have such a great organization behind us," said Bartlett.
Bartlett ended the 2017 year as the cumulative points' leader in the eastern region. The second-year Panther claimed three giant slalom wins last season, opening the year with a victory at St. Lawrence before taking home the crown at the University of Vermont and Middlebury Carnivals. She placed second in the GS at the EISA Championships and third at the Dartmouth Carnival. In her two seasons as a Panther, she has finished in the top 10 on eight different occasions.
"It was an honor for me to be able to present Caroline this award," said Middlebury Alpine Assistant Coach and VARA Vice President Abigail Copeland. "It was great timing with it also being Parents and Families Weekend at Middlebury, so both of her parents could be there in attendance. Caroline had a phenomenal season last year. Her historic carnival victory at the St. Lawrence Carnival at Whiteface Mountain was something I'll never forget with her 3.89 second margin of victory."
During the event, Middlebury had a strong alumni attendance as Kelly Brush Davisson '08 was also inducted into the VARA Hall of Fame. "It was just a really special night for Middlebury Alpine Skiing," said Copeland. "The evening highlighted the success of the individuals in the alpine program throughout the years!"
